Capitol Survival Guide

Find essential tips for navigating and advocating at the Texas Capitol during TFVC events. Learn about planning your visit, security, parking, attire, accessibility, and etiquette to ensure a smooth, impactful experience while promoting informed consent and vaccine choice.

Plan your trip by checking the weather, planning your route, packing snacks and chargers, and dressing appropriately.

Most TFVC Capitol events, such as Citizen Engagement Days and opportunities to testify in committee, require business or business casual attire.

However, for the Freedom Fight, wearing a TFVC shirt and other comfortable clothing is encouraged.

The best parking is at the Texas Capitol Visitors Parking Garage at 1201 San Jacinto Blvd, Austin. More visitor parking information is available here. If full, use the Bob Bullock Museum garage at 1800 Congress Ave, Austin. More museum parking info can be found here. An overview map of Capitol parking is here.

There are four entrances: North, South, East, and West. The North and South entrances are popular but can be slow due to crowds. If busy, consider using an East or West entrance.

You must place all possessions on the x-ray machine before passing through metal detectors. You may also be wanded by a DPS Trooper. An ID is not required in the general security line.

If exercising Second Amendment rights without a license, use the West entrance. Licensed carriers can use any entrance and bypass metal detectors by presenting their license at a separate security checkpoint.

Yes, all Capitol facilities are accessible, but the North Entrance is the only one for strollers and wheelchairs. Elevators may be crowded; plan accordingly for full participation in events. More accessibility information is available here.

The main floors are Ground, First (entrance level), Second, Third, and Fourth. Below are two additional floors called the Extension (E1 and E2, with E2 being lower). North wing elevators access all floors, including the Extension.

More layout information is available here.

The best restrooms are on the Ground Floor, which also has the best changing tables. A Mother’s Room is available at the end of E1.200. Family restrooms are near elevators on E2.

The Capitol Grill is located at E1.002. Although friendly and lively, lines are long, and seating is limited. We recommend bringing your own snacks due to limited allergen-friendly options.

Always address legislators as Representative or Senator, and as Chairman/Chairwoman if they’re a committee chair. In the House or Senate Gallery, no signs or tripods are allowed, maintain decorum, and remove hats.

Assume everyone is a friend in this fight. Greet everyone—staffers, elected officials, or Capitol Grill cooks—with warmth. Treat everyone with respect, seek to understand their position, and share yours.
