It’s not often that TFVC becomes deeply engaged in Constitutional Amendment elections, but this year we are proud to support Proposition 15 on the November ballot. For at least the last four sessions, we have strongly lobbied at the Texas Legislature for the proposition’s enabling legislation (most recently, SJR 34 in the 89th Regular Legislative Session), linking arms with numerous family law experts and constitutional lawyers as well as other pro-parent organizations in a persistent effort to codify the right of Texas parents to raise their children in a way that is consistent with their values. This right would protect parents from governmental overreach in various areas of their child’s upbringing, including – though hardly limited to – vaccination decisions.
While well-meaning advocates remain vocally skeptical of Proposition 15, arguing that it would actually increase the prevalence of governmental interference in parenting choices, there is no evidence available to substantiate these fears. Ample evidence exists to support Proposition 15, however, and we have fought incrementally to strengthen parental rights in various parts of statute in response to these cases. TFVC absolutely stands ready to continue to fight for crumbs every other year if necessary, or we can take a more holistic approach and establish in our Constitution our God-given right to parent as we see fit.
Consider this story from Ally Raskin, TFVC supporter and Dallas mother of two:
During COVID, my children were banned from school for not masking, and my healthy, unvaccinated daughter was forced into quarantine twice as long as others. I sued Dallas ISD but ultimately lost because I did not have a constitutional claim to parental rights.
That’s just one example of why Prop 15 matters. It ensures parents, not the government, make decisions for their children.
We hope that you join us in voting YES for Proposition 15 and encourage your loved ones to do so as well.
